Boy was I dreading my doctor’s appointment a few weeks ago. I mean, really; do I need someone else to point out that I’ve gotten a little puffy? I didn’t think he’d be pleased with me. My last visit he gave me two choices: exercise or cholesterol medicine.

“I’ll take exercise for 200, Doc,” I said jokingly. He wasn’t amused. Which, I guess in perspective is a good thing. He’s trying to show he cares.

We were both pleasantly surprised though. I’d lost four pounds since my last visit which was a 3-week span. I’ve slimmed down 16 pounds since the new year! I’m 244 down from 260.

8 WAYS TO SAVE THE CREMEPUFF

But, can I be honest? I despise the gym. It’s an overated petri dish; and, I’d just as soon lie on the couch in a Battlestar Gallatica Marathon induced coma, than subject myself to a meat market filled with putrid sweat and stale air. So, what am I gonna do? I’m no good to God’s Bespoke Tailoring, or you, overweight, or worse, dead!

*gasps*

Here are 8 ways I plan to create a fat free Cremepuff:

-Adopt a RBC Going Blue Project: I’ve already began to drink more water to help flush out the impurities and to keep my appetite somewhat under wraps. I wonder if I can submit that part of my plan to RBC’s Going Blue Project (an initiative to save our planet’s water). I’m keeping a 30 oz container full of water at my desk and I’m pushing to drink two of those each day while at work. That would almost take care of the necessary 64 oz a day we’re recommended to drink.

-Enlist a Honey Bee: Not a real one. You’ve seen those Honey Nut Cheerios commercials that brag about helping to lower cholesterol when incorporated into a good diet. I don’t know if I can handle plain cheerios. But I guess I could spice it up with some fresh strawberries, blueberries, or bananas, huh?

-Feed the Ducks: Wait, you gotta listen to this one. My office is in Downtown Huntsville in Big Springs Park. I’m right on the edge of the duck pond. There’s a sidewalk that stretches all the way around it which is nice to have when you want to take a midday stretch and stroll. I need to invest in a pair of new walking sneakers that I can keep here in the office, though.

-Join Neighborhood Watch: If I add another 30 min to an hour walk, either in the morning or in the evening, that will give me quite a bit of “cardio” each weekday. I have a quiet neighborhood to walk in. I would get a chance to meet the other walkers, runners, and bikers that I see passing by my house as I sit on the couch eating a Dairy Queen Blizzard glancing out the window during commercial breaks.

-Mimick Michael Phelps: I love to swim! There’s a natatorium about 3 miles from my house that a friend and I have already talked about frequenting in order to swim laps. I joined the YMCA last month which gives me access to a pool, too. In high school I was on the swim team. We were like the Bad News Bears. Unfortunately, the story didn’t end in us winning. We got skunked every meet!

-Audition For So You Think You Can Dance: Okay, yes, if you’ve been with GBT since the beginning, you know I’m too old to be on the show. Get this: I’ve been taking Jazz and Ballet classes from Alabama Youth Ballet since Summer 2010. I was a dancer in my younger days and I think it will be fun to stay involved again. Painful, yet fun.

-Go Green: Yeah, going green is the happening thing. Well, I’m not speaking about turning off lights and carpooling. I mean the edible green. Incorporating more raw fruits and vegetables into my diet. Salads with balsamic vinegarette or some jazzy flavor of italian, fresh fruit smoothies in the evening instead of a big heavy dinner, home grown sprouts, and even fresh squeezed vegetable & fruit juices.

-Continued Education: Gotta stay abreast with health and exercise in order to follow a safe and beneficial program. My first subscription of Men’s Health arrived last week and I’m pulling out one of my favorite authors on health, Ellen G White. It’s time to dust the books off and put them back to use.

So, my question for you today is: What would you add to the list to save the cremepuff (or what are you doing already)?

My doctor suggested that I pick my sexual activity back up!

Almost a year later, and the post below still rings true. Although, I can cheer the fact that I’ve become much more active than I was last year this time. Progress, baby! The race is given to those that endure. I need you to join me in getting fit physically and spiritually. Two is better than one right? Stay tailored – er.

WHY’S IT SO HARD TO EXERCISE (S:1)

I’ve been planning for two weeks now to get up every morning and “ride” the elliptical in my den. When my alarm clock goes off I don’t even hit snooze, I turn it off. Next thing I know it’s 10 ’til 8 and I should be in the car heading to work, but I’m just rolling over and wiping “cat boogers” out of my eyes.

Building Christian character can be a strain sometimes, but it is necessary to "keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." – 2 Peter 1:8 NIV - Mike Waters

This morning I asked God why it’s so hard for me to get up and exercise; a question which kind of piggy-backed off of my question last night, “Lord, why do I keep praying, asking for Your forgiveness and then an hour later find myself failing in the same area?” Why is being a Christian so hard?

If you know anything about lifting weights you know that a spotter is a necessity to reach optimal results. A good spotter watches your form, encourages you, lightly assists with the last few reps that you’re straining to push out, and suggests additional weight & guides you to the next level of fitness. I remembered all of that this morning when I opened my work inbox and saw Mike Water’s Joyful ‘toon for this week titled “Character Building.”

I laughed at myself because I actually could see me as the Christian trembling and sweating under the weight of faith, virtue and knowledge while the Holy Spirit is preparing to add temperance and patience. But that’s the key, trusting the Holy Spirit as my spotter, knowing that though I may be getting tired and my muscles are wobbling if I just push on through; if I just get up and do it I’ll be okay.

Proverbs 24:16 says:

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again…

So, though I’ve been slacking and weary I just have to get up, dust myself off (and wipe the sleep out of my eyes), and try again.
